Let's learn about a new type of rest that you'll be dealing with in the intermediate level the quaver rest.
Again, a pretty simple thing, as the name suggests, it is a rest that lasts for one quaver beat i.e. half of a crotchet note.
Where the beat is a crotchet, which means that when the somewhat denominator of the time signature is 4, the quaver rest is only used if there is no other quaver rest within the same crotchet beat. Didn't understand anything didya ? What I am basically trying to say is, you can't use two quavers rests consecutively IF they belong to the same crotchet beat (you can just simply use a crotchet rest there)
Now, if a dotted crotchet worth of silence (1.5 crotchet beats) is required, we always complete one crotchet beat with a rest and then move to the next. Look at the stave below to understand better.
CORRECT
INCORRECT
Over here, what we have basically done is that, in the first stave, we initially completed the 2nd crotchet beat with a quaver rest and then moved onto the third one. But in the second image, you can see that we have not exactly completed the 2nd beat.
One final thing to note is that, as we had discussed in the beginner level, in a common time signature (4-4), we assume a hidden barrier in between beats 1&2 AND 3&4, the same rules applies here while placing the quaver rest as well.
And now I am bored, so I'll go watch some Brooklyn 99.
PEACE ! 🎼 👈 that’s a treble clef btw :)
