Taal is the rhythmic framework of Indian classical music. Every piece of classical music is set in a Taal, and understanding Taal is non-negotiable. Like, you literally cannot do anything else without it.
The word Taal comes from "Tala" meaning clapping. And there is a reason for that. Taal is not just heard, it is felt and shown with the hands. When you watch a classical performance, you will often see the vocalist keeping time with subtle hand movements. That is Taal being counted.
The formal definition: Taal is the measurement of music. It is a fixed rhythmic cycle made up of a specific number of Matras, organized into groups called Vibhag, with specific positions for Sam, Taali and Khali.
That is a lot of words. Let's break each one down.
Vibhag
Vibhag means section or division. A Taal's total Matras are divided into smaller groups called Vibhags. These groups help you keep track of where you are in the cycle.
Teentaal, for example, has 16 Matras divided into 4 Vibhags of 4 Matras each: 4+4+4+4.
Dadra has 6 Matras divided into 2 Vibhags of 3 Matras each: 3+3.
Keharwa has 8 Matras divided into 2 Vibhags of 4 Matras each: 4+4.
Sam
Sam is the first Matra of any Taal. It is the most important beat in the entire cycle. Sam is where everything comes together: the vocalist, the tabla player, the audience, the composition. Landing on Sam cleanly, especially after improvisation, is one of the most satisfying moments in a classical performance.
In Bhatkhande notation, Sam is marked with an X. In Paluskar notation, it is marked with the number 1.
Sam is so important that one of the highest compliments in Indian classical music is to say someone has a strong Sam. It means they never lose the thread no matter how complex the improvisation gets.
Khali
Khali literally means empty. It is the beat that is deliberately not clapped, the wave instead of the clap when you keep Taal with your hands.
In Teentaal, the Khali falls on beat 9. In Dadra, it falls on beat 4. In Keharwa, it falls on beat 5.
The purpose of Khali is structural. It creates contrast within the cycle, marking the halfway point (in most Taals) and giving the rhythm a shape beyond just a steady count.
Theka
Theka is the specific pattern of tabla bols (syllables) used to play a Taal. Every Taal has a Theka. The Theka of Teentaal is: Dha Dhin Dhin Dha / Dha Dhin Dhin Dha / Dha Tin Tin Ta / Ta Dhin Dhin Dha.
The Taal is the abstract framework. The Theka is how it sounds on the tabla. One Taal can have multiple Thekas, but it has one standard Theka that everyone learns first.
Avartan
Avartan means one complete cycle of a Taal from Sam back to Sam. When the vocalist completes a composition and lands back on Sam, that is one Avartan. The music then begins the next Avartan and the cycle continues.

Common Misconceptions
Students often mix up Sam and the first Matra as separate concepts. They are the same thing. Sam is the first Matra.
Khali is not a rest or silence. The music continues. Only the clap is replaced by a wave of the hand.
