Raag Khamaj is one of the most versatile and widely used raags in the Hindustani tradition. It sits at the intersection of classical and semi-classical music and you will encounter it constantly.
The Basics
Thaat: Khamaj
Jati: Shadav-Sampurna (6 notes in Aaroha, 7 notes in Avaroha)
Vaadi: Gandhar (Ga)
Samvaadi: Nishaad (Ni)
Varjit Swars: Rishabh (Re) in Aaroha only
Special feature: Uses both Shuddha Ni and Komal Ni
Time: Second Prahar of the night or any time
Aaroha: Sa Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa (Re omitted)
Avaroha: Sa ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa (Komal ni in Avaroha)
Pakad: Ga Ma Pa Dha ni Dha Pa / Dha Ga Ma Ga
The Character
Khamaj is playful, romantic and light. Unlike the more serious Bhupali or melancholic Kafi, Khamaj has a certain charm and movement to it. The alternation between Shuddha Ni in the Aaroha and Komal Ni in the Avaroha is one of its most distinctive features.
Because Re is omitted in Aaroha, Khamaj tends to move with a skip: from Sa directly to Ga. This gives the ascending movement a certain bounce.
Semi-classical forms like Thumri, Tappa, Dadra, and Kajri are all heavily associated with Khamaj. In fact, the entire Khamaj Thaat is associated with lighter, more romantic music. Heavy classical Vilambit Khayal (slow composition) is generally not performed in Khamaj, though instrumental slow compositions (called Masitkhani Gat) are common.
Like Kafi, Khamaj is also the Ashray raag of its Thaat. Knowing this for both Kafi and Khamaj is an easy exam point.

Listening Task
Look up "Raag Khamaj thumri" on YouTube. Notice the playful, light character. Then compare it to Kafi. Both are associated with semi-classical music but they feel completely different. That difference in feel is the difference in the notes and in the personality of the raag. 🎵
